Best Beaches To Surf In Byron Bay

Friday 28 February 2020

Byron Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations for not only surfing but the whole ‘hippy vibe’ as well. Within such a beautiful place boasts a variety of beaches perfect for all kinds of surfers.

This is the most popular beach for surfers in Byron Bay and for good reason! It’s perfect for anyone from beginners to experienced surfers and depending on what time of day you go it’s perfect for both long boarders and short boarders. The best time to surf here is when there is off shore winds (southerly / easterly) and between 1-6ft.

The main beach in Byron can sometimes be a hit and sometimes be a miss. This beach is a bit rougher than the others in Byron Bay as it is open but still offers good waves. Again, off shore wind is the best at this beach.

On the other side of the head next to Main Beach is a beach the locals like to call ‘The Wreck’ due to an old shipwreck which can be seen sticking out of the water. Similar to Main Beach, it can be a hit or a miss and waves a similar to Main Beach as well. It is a bit more sheltered though so offers a cleaner swell. Go off the conditions for Main Beach for this one as The Wreck isn’t listed on many popular surf forecast websites.

Wategos Beach is alright for experienced surfers, however if you walk a little further around the rocks you’ll get to Little Wategos which is so much better! Little Wategos is a small cove at the most eastern point of Australia and offers clean waves perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers.
