Melbourne to Byron Bay Road Trip Itinerary

I recently took a road trip from my home town in Melbourne to sunny Byron Bay. I only just got back home and am excited to share our itinerary of the amazing time we had!

Summary
Total number of days driving: 4 days all up. This is 2 days on the way up to Byron Bay and 2 days on the way back. 

Stops during road trip: Campbelltown for 1 night both on the drive up and drive down.

Total number of days of trip: 9 days.

Accommodation: Camping at First Sun Holiday Park Byron Bay and two overnight stays at Ibis Budget Campbelltown.


Day 1: Melbourne to Campbelltown


825km ~ 8 hours

Start your road trip by driving just over eight hours and stopping in Campbelltown in Western Sydney to spend the night.

On the drive up, stop at Euroa for breakfast where there are many cute little cafes.

For lunch, stop at the Dog on the Tuckerbox. Here you can see the iconic statue of the dog on the tucker box and feast down on many options including Subway, KFC and cafes.

Stay overnight at Ibis Budget Campbelltown.





810km ~ 9 hours

Leave early the next day and begin another full day of driving to Byron Bay.

On the way, stop at the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour.

Arrive and set up camp at First Sun Holiday Park in Byron Bay.

Spend the rest of the night visiting the Byron Bay Twilight Market before grabbing a bite to eat from Guzman y Gomez.



Day 3: Sightseeing and Shopping




Spend the morning walking around the shops in the town of Byron Bay. Visit all the surf shops and buy some hippy clothes.

Hire a bike from the holiday park and ride up to Brooke Drive where you can begin the walk up to the famous Lighthouse and the most easterly point of Australia.

Finish off the day by going for a surf at Wategos Beach.

Go to the Northern Hotel for dinner.




Begin the day by going for a surf at Main Beach.

Take a trip on the Byron Bay Solar Train to North Byron.

Explore North Byron and window shop at Habitat.

Take the solar train back to Byron Bay.

Go for a surf at The Pass.

Have dinner at El Camino Cantina Tex-Mex Restaurant.






Visit Killen Falls. Here you can explore the caves, swim under the waterfall and see some turtles.

Explore Hanging Rock Falls. Jump off the waterfall or swim in the pools.

When back in Byron, go for a surf at The Wreck.



Take an hour drive up to the Gold Coast for a day and visit Movie World. Enjoy the exciting rollercoasters and rides they have to offer.





Have a big breakfast at Fresh Byron.

Spend the day exploring surrounding beaches and towns including Whites Beach, Little Wategos, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads.

Finish off the day by surfing at The Pass.

Grab dinner and dessert at Betty's Burgers & Concrete Co.




810km ~ 9 hours

Drive nine hours to back down to Campbelltown and stay the night at Ibis Budget Campbelltown.


825km ~ 8 hours

Drive eight hours home, stopping for lunch in Albury-Wodonga.
